K9 Search and Rescue of Kansas, Inc.
Membership Guidelines

Probationary Members: All new members must complete a probationary period of 4 months. During this time you will be required to attend 75% of all monthly trainings. You will also use this time to determine whether or not K9SAR work is for you, learn about how dogs work in the field and play victim to dogs in training. Before the completion of the probationary period it is highly recommended that you also study for the SAR Tech III online exam. All members must take and pass this test as a minimum to continue with K9 SARK. You will need to purchase the book, The Fundamentals of Search and Rescue, from the NASAR website for taking this test. Probationary members who wish to train a K9 will not bring their dog to trainings unless specifically told by the training officer. DO NOT assume that you can bring yours because someone brought theirs. This permission only extends to the day you were given the OK and does not allow your dog to be present at following sessions. Probationary members are also required to take a county CERT class and it is your responsibility to locate one. If one does not become available during your 4 month probation this class may be waived until a later date should we have a number of people needing it.

Members: Upon completion of probation, new members who wish to go into field work will be required to begin studying for the NASAR SAR Tech II test. It is required that all members pass this test to be able to go into the field as either a K9 Handler or Flanker. Any member who chooses to participate in a support role, such as Incident Command, Radio Operator or other non-field related duties will not have to take this test. Any member wishing to continue into field must take and pass at a minimum a Red Cross/ American Heart Association or equivalent CPR and First Aid course. These courses may be waived for those who are First Responders or those in the medical field where these may already be requirements. Copies of documentation attesting to proficiency in these areas must be presented to the Secretary of K9SARK. Any member wishing to pursue the role of a K9 handler will also be required to take and pass a Pet First Aid course. You will need to take National Incident Management System Classes IS-100, IS-200, and IS-700 provided by FEMA. These classes are free and available online. Members will also need to purchase a pair of black BDU pants. We will provide 1 t-shirt, a hat and I.D. badge once a member has passed their SAR Tech III.

K9s: Before any canine is accepted into K9SARK, it will first be evaluated for its’ temperament and aptitude towards search work. Obedience is a must in SAR and all canines will under a handlers control while off lead. Canines are also required to obtain its’ AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) before being allowed to interact with other members dogs or allowed to begin field work. We have members that can assist you with obtaining your canines CGC. Assistance with obedience can also be arranged. Aggressive dogs will not be admitted into K9SARK.
